The 7th International Conference on Romani Linguistics is dedicated to the memory of Milena Hübschmannová (10 June 1933 — 8 September 2005), the leading personality in Romani studies in Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic, who tragically died almost exactly a year ago. Without her it would be highly unlikely that the current conference could take place in Prague. She founded of the Charles University programme in Romani Studies in 1991 and co-organized the 3rd International Conference on Romani Linguistics, which was held in Prague ten years ago. The special theme of 7ICRL would have been close to her heart: she always stressed the interdisciplinary nature of Romani studies and her research and cultural-political activism were rooted in her intimate knowledge of both the language and the culture of the (Czech and Slovak) Roms. For further information on Milena Hübschmannová you may consult the obituary by Victor Friedman (Romani Studies V, 2005, 15, 2, 197–200) and the forthcoming (ňilaj 2006) issue of Romano džaniben, the Czech journal of Romani studies that she also founded.
